RWL Newsletter #73
Greetings from the University of New Hampshire! I'm just back from teaching my last class for the semester! Woo-hoo! Now, just one final exam and a huge stack of grading between me and "break".
I always try to leave my classes with a few parting thoughts. I drew on Smith, father of modern economics, for my farewell to my management class today. My final comment was that if you work on being a better person, you will naturally become a better leader, whatever the outside world perceives.
So here's a few links to contemplate as we roll into finals week!
Read
What: Design Thinking Blog, How to Lead a Design-Driven Organization
https://designthinking.ideo.com/?p=1583
Why: This is a short, fun piece that provides several lenses to think about leadership through. Worth 10 minutes. Plus Tim Brown is awesome.
Watch
What: Elevator Pitch Examples with Chris Westfall (3 min)
https://youtu.be/98WlZJqscVk
Why: We were talking about elevator pitches in a faculty meeting the other day, so I thought I'd share this very short video. It's really only a brief explanation and one example, but it's useful to remind yourself about this skill.
Listen
What: Uncommon Knowledge, How To Fail At Almost Everything With Scott Adams
https://soundcloud.com/hoover-institution/how-to-fail-at-almost
Why: Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert cartoon, is interviewed here. There is a video version here. He has some really interesting comments on President Trump's way of communicating and how he has succeeded. The commentary is relatively a-political, and more about the behaviors that make Trump successful. But there's a lot more here. He's a really interesting guy.
Thanks for reading and see you next week! If you come across any interesting stories, won't you send them my way? I'd love to hear what you think of these suggestions, and I'd love to get suggestions from you. Feel free to drop me a line by e-mail, or you can tweet to me at @bonicatalent .
