RWL Newsletter #63
Greetings from the University of New Hampshire! Picture above is actually taken on the University's property in an area called "College Woods." We truly have a beautiful campus.
This week is a mixed bag, but the links loosely revolve around design. Check them out - let me know what you think!

What: HBR, Health Care Providers Can Use Design Thinking to Improve Patient Experiences
https://hbr.org/2017/08/health-care-providers-can-use-design-thinking-to-improve-patient-experiences
Why: I am a big fan of IDEO and Design Thinking. It fits perfectly with the idea of patient centered care, a term I think is often bandied about, but not really understood. " design thinking, a creative, human-centered problem-solving approach that leverages empathy, collective idea generation, rapid prototyping, and continuous testing to tackle complex challenges. Unlike traditional approaches to problem solving, design thinkers take great efforts to understand patients and their experiences before coming up with solutions."
Watch
What: TEDxUofM, Improving Healthcare: Straight from the Heart, Sanjay Saint (18 minutes)
https://youtu.be/U3MtvvNjUR4
Why: My student, Allison, found this video for her blog this week and wrote a very nice post which I recommend. Allison says, "The term heartfulness is derived from the late Dr. Aredis Donabedian. He explains heartfulness as having love for your patients, your colleagues, and love for your hospital. This got me to thinking that maybe another method to encourage adherence to these quality protocols is promoting heartfulness. Maybe by creating a culture where "heartliness" and "doing the right thing, the right way," go hand in hand, we can promote organizations where we see 40% compliance for policies like hand washing rise to 100."
Listen
What: Voices in Healthcare Finance, Episode 18, How Payers are Addressing the Opioid Crisis (10 minutes)
https://soundcloud.com/hfma/voices-in-healthcare-finance-episode-18
Why: This is a multipart podcast, I am recommending the first segment (10 minutes) with Ken Duckworth, MD, medical director for behavioral health for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, who talks about how providers, payers, and other entities are addressing the opioid crisis. It's interesting to think about the role of payers in addressing the opioid crisis.
