RWL Newsletter #61
Greetings from the University of New Hampshire! What a great week! My students are all getting into the material and it's great to see such a high level of engagement. Today we were privileged to have Tate Curti come speak to my management class about his role as COO of Southern New Hampshire Health. Since this is a survey course about the structure and functions of a healthcare organization, I try to bring in leaders from the local area to talk about their roles and organizations. Tate did a great job talking about how it all fits together.

What: Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, Leadership and Management—Guiding Principles, Best Practices, and Core Attributes, Baker, Edward L. MD, MPH
http://journals.lww.com/jphmp/Fulltext/2014/05000/Leadership_and_Management_Guiding_Principles,_Best.15.aspx
Why: Our theme in my management course last week was leadership. Olivia found this article about the difference between leadership and management and shared it on her blog. I mostly agree with this article - I often say management is about getting the trains to run on time, leadership is about deciding where the trains need to run to. Quick read - worth checking out.

What: The subversive power of servant leadership | Ian Fuhr | TEDxJohannesburg
https://youtu.be/XKrTEEHID50
Why: When I do my interviews with executives and ask them about their leadership philosophy, the two things I hear are "I'm a transformational leader" or "I'm a servant leader". So this week, I talked about these two philosophies with my students. Monica blogged about servant leadership for class, and included this interesting TED Talk about what servant leadership means. I have to admit, this video was a surprise to me. It's consistent with the theory, but the stories were unique. My favorite line (roughly), "if the staff is always kneeling and groveling in front of the boss, what part of the employee is customer-facing?" Enjoy this story.

http://healthleaderforge.blogspot.com/2017/09/john-w-polanowicz-evp-of-hospital.html
Why: Steward Health is a rapidly growing health system that originated in the Boston area, but will shortly include hospitals across the US. John had a very interesting career, including being the Sec HHS for Massachusetts.
