RWL Newsletter #45
Greetings from the University of New Hampshire! Summer seems to be arriving just in time to see the Class of '17 walk across the stage tomorrow! That's my department's gang - heading out to start the next phase of their lives! We're very proud of their accomplishments and look forward to hearing about what they will do next.
But here are some links for you to do next...
Read
What: Askblog, A Provocative Health Care Proposal, by Arnold Kling
http://www.arnoldkling.com/blog/a-provocative-health-care-proposal/
Why: Kling often has interesting insights into healthcare from a micro economist's perspective. Here he comments on the following: "No government funded program or government billed invoice will be paid for medical treatment where a lifestyle change will provide a substantially equivalent or superior benefit that the customer refuses to implement." Market solutions require hard incentives sometimes. The whole post is interesting (and short).
Watch
What: Edgar H. Schein outlines the Leadership Lesson on his new book: 'Humble Inquiry'
https://youtu.be/vK0BRFVBjEs
Why: The safety literature says that the main problem is upward communication. Management literature finds the same thing - people only tell managers good news. Upward communication is the difficulty, particularly as interdependence grows between boss and subordinate. I heard about Schein's work when we interviewed Sue DeMarco for the Health Leader Forge. This book is on my summer reading list, but I thought I'd share this bit of a longer interview with Schein with you. I'm sure I'll be sharing more later.
Listen
What: Health Leader Forge interview with Greg White, CEO of Lamprey Health Care
http://healthleaderforge.blogspot.com/2017/05/gregory-white-cpa-ceo-of-lamprey-health.html
Why: The latest HLF interview is with Greg White, the CEO of Lamprey Health Care. Lamprey is an FQHC. This interview is great for getting to know a little more about that particular segment of the market, and Greg has some great comments about leadership as well. The interview is done by two HMP juniors, Regan Judge and Caroline Sweny.
FYI, I will be cutting down the frequency of HLF podcasts to one per month (from two per month) for the foreseeable future, at least until I can transition the podcast to a primarily student-run production.
That's it for this week!
