RWL Newsletter #34
Greetings from Wildcat Country! Or maybe I should say fisher cat country! I took this picture out my kitchen window earlier this week. Apparently this beastie is a called a fisher cat - at first we thought it was a fox, but it moved like a badger. I'd never heard of a fisher cat, but my friends assured me that's what this was once I posted the image to FB. Let me just say, it reminded me of how much is going on around us all the time that we are not aware of. This little guy clearly knew his way around my yard because he came right in, quite deliberately, where there was a gap in the fence, and scooted out the other side with just as much familiarity. And yet, it was the first time I'd seen him (or maybe her). I thought it was a nice leadership metaphor - you can't know everything that is going on in your organization all the time. Or maybe it should be, you have to be ready for surprises. Or maybe...
You get the idea! Here's some tidbits of goodness this week, two of which are recommendations from my Org Behavior students, and the third is my latest HLF interview.
Read
What: Via Character Survey
http://www.viacharacter.org/www/
Why: On Monday the students in my Organizational Behavior class presented about character and values. They had us all take the Via Character Survey as a point of discussion. It's an interesting survey. You do have to set up an account, but they don't seem spammy, so I am sharing it here. It was an interesting tool. If you have access to an academic database, I recommend the following reading to go with it:
Character and Authentic Transformational Leadership Behavior: Expanding the Ascetic Self Toward Others. Cameron and Sosik, Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research, 2010. Vol 62, No 4. (251-269)
Even without the reading, it's a fun exercise. Like most of these tools, I believe it is a good place to start a discussion, not end one.
Watch
What: TED Talk, The puzzle of motivation, by Dan Pink
http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pink_on_motivation
Why: Students in my Org Behavior class presented on motivation, and shared this TED Talk. It's an interesting discussion about the unexpected negative impact of hard incentives (money) on creative/cognitive performance. The solution is getting at intrinsic motivation - giving the people we lead autonomy, mastery, purpose.
Listen
What: Health Leader Forge interview with Brigadier General Jeffrey J. Johnson, Commander, Brooke Army Medical Center
http://healthleaderforge.blogspot.com/2017/03/brigadier-general-jeffrey-j-johnson.html
Why: BG Johnson command's the DoD's largest teaching hospital. A physician leader, he has had a fascinating career practicing medicine and leading organizations ranging from clinics to combat units before coming to BAMC. We have a great discussion about his career, military medicine, and leadership.
