RWL Newsletter #33
Greetings from the University of just crazy winter weather! This past week was just crazy with snow, with probably more accumulation than all of the rest of the winter combined. But today it was almost 70 degrees! I rode my scooter in to the office with my sunglasses on.
Anyway, this semester I am requiring my students in my organizational behavior course to independently explore issues around organizational behavior and leadership and blog about them. Two of this week's recommendations come to you courtesy of my students. I've included links to their blogs so you can let them know you appreciate their work.
Read
What: from Success.com, Why the Empathetic Leader Is the Best Leader
http://www.success.com/article/why-the-empathetic-leader-is-the-best-leader
Why: My student Caroline shared this article on her blog ( http://hmp722cs.blogspot.com/2017/02/empathy-in-leadership.html ). I liked what the article had to say about the chemistry of empathy. I also identified with the Sinek references on why leaders eat last. There's truth to that based on my military experience.
Watch
What: TED Talk, How to speak up for yourself, by Adam Galinsky
https://www.ted.com/talks/adam_galinsky_how_to_speak_up_for_yourself
Why: My student David shared this talk on his blog ( http://hmp722unh.blogspot.com/2017/02/week-2-post-2-asserting-yourself.html ), and I thought I would share it with you. Some great advice about advocating for yourself.
Listen
What: Ezra Klein's interview with Avik Roy on the Ezra Klein Show
http://www.stitcher.com/s?eid=49126014
Why: Ezra Klein is one of the most articulate and thoughtful Progressive commentators in media today in my opinion. He interviews Avik Roy, a conservative policy wonk who writes extensively on health policy, on his podcast at this link. I regularly read Roy and agree with much of what he has to say, but I appreciate Klein's insight, even though I am not aligned with him politically, so it is interesting to hear the two of them have a thoughtful, civil conversation. We could use more discourse like this in politics.
