RWL Newsletter #3
Happy Friday! Thanks for subscribing to the Read, Watch, Listen newsletter.
I’ve picked some interesting items that support important leadership themes in health this week: resilience, innovation, and communication.
Reading
What: From the HBR, How Resilience Works by Diane Coutu. An article that talks about what resilience is and why it is important.
Why: I zoomed in on this article in part because the Army was launching a service-wide resilience training program because of ongoing issues with suicide. The references to Frankl's work (Man's Search for Meaning) in particular touched me. This is relevant as a healthcare leader both for your own leadership and your organization, as well as when you think about the patients you serve.

Watching
What: This is a short (5 minute) video showing some advances in basic science around pain research.
Why: What I found particularly interesting about this video was not the technology per se, but the assumptions that were behind the development of the technology - a deeper understanding of the problem in the form of understanding rodent psychology. It's the deeper understanding that's worth meditating on (I don't personally care about rodent psychology).

Listening
What: Interview with the head speechwriter for President Obama about writing speeches for the President.
Why: This is especially for early careerists to think about working for a senior executive. Also tips on how to communicate complex issues to a wide audience. This is not a political endorsement - there is something to learn here regardless of your political leanings.
