RWL Newlsetter #49
Greetings from the University of New Hampshire by way of Long Beach, California! I'm sitting in my hotel room in Long Beach finishing up this week's newsletter because I just finished attending the annual Association of University Programs in Healthcare Administration (AUPHA) - the organization that accredits my program. I have to admit, it's a little intimidating sitting in a room with a whole lot of professors who care a whole lot about teaching and listening to all the amazing things they are doing in their respective programs. It makes me feel like a slouch. But it's also really motivating to think about all the great things I could try to implement.
Anyway, flight back across the continent tomorrow and back to work. So here's this week's leadership links for you to enjoy:

What: Society for Human Resource Managers, Labor Department Revokes Expansive Definitions of ‘Employer’, By Allen Smith, J.D
https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/legal-and-compliance/employment-law/pages/withdrawn-dol-guidances.aspx
Why: Quick policy analysis from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) on changes to labor regulation. The question of who is an employee is always messier than it sounds - just go up to your favorite HR director and ask how many employees her organization has, and then watch her jaw clench. The Obama administration supported ever wider definitions of "employee" in order to force a number of their regulatory initiatives. The Trump administration (surprise!) is reversing that trend. I thought I'd share this article because first of all, a hospital has a whole lot of unusual employment arrangements, and second because it demonstrates the Trump administration's deregulatory efforts are not limited to healthcare.

What: TED's secret to great public speaking | Chris Anderson (8 minutes)

Why: Four guidelines on how to give an effective talk, from the owner of TED. I don't think I need to tell you much more.
Listen
What: Health Leader Forge interview with Major General Thomas R. Tempel, Commanding General, US Army Regional Health Command - Central
http://healthleaderforge.blogspot.com/2017/06/major-general-thomas-r-tempel-jr.html
Why: MG Tempel is one of the senior leaders in the Army Medical Department, with geographic responsibility for the central region of the US, which includes more than 440,000 military beneficiaries, and in 2016 delivered 5.8 million clinic visits, 7,600 live births, and 57,000 admissions. MG Tempel started his career as a special forces dentist, working his way up to ever larger leadership roles. This is a great interview because MG Tempel is such a down-to-earth individual, yet his accomplishments are really quite remarkable. I hope you enjoy the interview and I recommend the full length version because we talk quite a bit about his special forces experience in that version (which I clipped for time in the edited version).
Just a side note, I will be scaling back publication of the Health Leader Forge from twice monthly to just once per month for the foreseeable future. Please enjoy this podcast and tell your friends!
That's it for this week!
