Greetings from the University of New Hampshire! This is going to be a short edition of RWL. On Monday the duplex my daughter lived in with two roommates caught fire. Luckily for her, it was not her side of the duplex, but she is now homeless because of smoke damage on her side. Everyone made it out without a scratch from both sides, including seven cats and two chinchillas. Her neighbor (her name is Camryn) lost her car (in the picture above) and almost all of her possessions. Unfortunately Camryn did not have renters or auto insurance, so she is not only homeless, but lost most of her clothes, computer, etc. If you are so moved, here is Camryn’s gofundme: https://gofund.me/fb54a741 (to be clear, this is for my daughter’s neighbor Camryn, not my daughter - my daughter had renters insurance). As a result of all this, the LHH picked up seven more residents on Monday afternoon - my daughter, her two roommates, and my daughter’s four cats. My wife and I are very happy to be able to help our daughter and her friends, and I have been working with them to find new housing, but the housing market is crazy right now, so it’s complicated, and as a result I’ve been pretty distracted this week trying to help them take care of getting the stuff that they can keep out of the damaged apartment.
So that’s what’s happening this week. Still willing good for all of you, I present you with the links!
(the picture above is not mine - but that is Camryn’s car and her and my daughter’s house)
Read
What: Boston Globe, He lost his arm in an accident. A new surgery and a bionic prosthetic are giving him back unprecedented control.
Why: I have a little bit of an obsession with prosthetics and connecting them to neurological control. This is kind of amazing.
Watch
What: Conor Neill, 3 Lessons on Focus from @DandapaniLLC, a Hindu Monk who teaches Entrepreneurs how to use their Minds
Why: The focus of the three lessons is energy and where you put it. Conor is great.
Listen
What: A Slight Change of Plans, The Science of Connection
https://www.pushkin.fm/episode/the-science-of-connection/
Why: I remember taking a health policy course while I was doing my MBA and learning that most people suffer depression at some point in their lives, and that just having someone to talk to - even someone untrained - was a powerful intervention. This psychiatrist in Zimbabwe is taking that concept a step further: call in the grandmothers! This is a beautiful story.
