RWL #1
Greetings! Thanks for taking the time to check out my new weekly newsletter, Reading, Watching, Listening. I've traditionally sent out extra material to students in my classes and called them "BM" e-mails, short for bonus material, but I thought I'd use a slightly nicer name here. We'll call this RWL.
Each week I am going to send out a link to something to read, watch, and listen to that would be of interest to health leaders, and particularly early careerists.
I hope you like the e-mail. Please share it with your friends if you think it is useful! And feel free to send me suggestions!
Reading
For reading, I suggest you check out Atul Gawande’s article “Hot Spotting” http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/01/24/the-hot-spotters
This is a good article about the use of data and population health – two themes you are going to be hearing a lot more about and you will be working with professionally.
Watching
Check out this TED talk with Dan Ariely about decisions. Ariely is known for his work in behavioral economics, the intersection between psychology and economics. Behavioral econ is being integrated in health care, especially around public health questions like how do we encourage people to live healthier lives? Everyone knows eating too much and not getting enough exercise is bad; why don’t we just do what we’re supposed to do?

Listening
You really should have a subscription to the Health Leader Forge (free on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/healthleaderforge/id981989377 )
I’m really excited about my most recent interview with Dr. Nirav Shah, the COO of Kaiser Southern California. Nirav is a physician with a background in epidemiology, and previously the commissioner of health for the State of New York. He’s brilliant and really genuine. I think you’ll learn a lot from the interview. Here’s the link to Nirav’s interview: http://healthleaderforge.blogspot.com/2016/07/nirav-shah-md-mph-senior-vp-and-coo-for.html
There are a lot of other very good podcasts you should be listening to as well. I’ll share some more with you later on. But, at risk of sounding self-serving, The Health Leader Forge is designed with people like you in mind. It’s a series of road maps to success in health care.
That's it for this week - see you again on Friday!
